Beskrivning

Join the Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy group to help develop the European Transport Simulator (ETS), a cutting-edge fusion research tool supporting the development of modelling fusion power plants. We’re hiring Research Engineers with expertise in areas such as UI design, data analysis, AI/ML integration, and HPC workflows to contribute to the next-generation modeling framework.

Information about the department The Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy (PPFE) group at the Department of Space, Earth and Environment/Astronomy and Plasma physics division has its main activities in modeling, simulation and analysis of tokamak plasmas. A major part of the work is towards the establishment of a predictive capability for fusion energy grade plasmas and model validation towards current experiments. The group has extensive collaborations with major fusion devices and are taking part in the developments for the ITER experiment and the design of scenarios for future pilot power plants.

The activities are fully integrated with the European (EUROfusion) activities, and the research group also engages in the development of open data access for fusion experiments and modeling data. We are now aiming to upgrade our main research tool to a new modelling framework while also upgrading user interfaces and data analysis capabilities.

Major responsibilities

The ETS project addresses a range of technical challenges, and we are currently moving the code to a new python based High Performance Computing enabled modelling framework. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a high-impact scientific codebase that supports fusion research across major European experiments and ITER. The work will be performed in a collaborative, international environment, with opportunities to engage with a wide network of researchers and institutions across Europe.

Contract terms

This is a fulltime temporary employment limited to a maximum of 360 days.

Qualifications

We are looking for individuals with relevant expertise towards at least one of the activities below:

  • Maintain the ETS workflow in the Python/MUSCLE3 framework including CD/CI support
  • Develop analysis tools for ETS components (e.g., runtime debugging, offline debugging for Transport Code Interfaces package)
  • Maintain and further develop python based visualization tools for ETS (runtime, postprocessing).
  • Develop the graphical user interface for ETS
  • Integration and support of AI/ML-based surrogate models
  • Support the ETS data access tools and help integrate ETS output in an open access environment

Furthermore, you should have a M. Sc in relevant field, for example Computational Science, Software Engineering or Computational Physics. Experience in programming (python, C++, fortran...), data management and/or visualization is needed. Experiences in plasma physics is meriting but not mandatory.
